“Where is it?” Kate frantically searched for her amulet. What possessed her to take it off in the first place she would never understand. Never once had she taken it off, yet last night she had. She couldn’t explain it, but her necklace made her feel safe, as secure as if her mother still watched over her. She knew it to be silly, yet she found comfort in that jewel.

Throwing furs left and right, she became more and more frustrated with herself. Hawk would be back soon and she had to be ready to go. “Hawk?” Kate stood straight up, stunned. Hawk was in trouble. She could feel his distress as if he was inside her. Her arms tingled and itched as she glanced at them. A glow trailed and swirled up and down her arms all the way down to her hands. Power surged through the paths, leaving behind something she could only describe as magic. “By the saints!” Bewildered, she rubbed her arms.

A white mist floated up from the floor. Desperately she tried to avoid the fog as it encircled her body, but it was of no use. The thick white smoke swirled up, encasing her in magic.

The door swung open and Hawk rushed in and abruptly halted. “Kate?” He couldn’t believe what he saw. A cloud of white magic swirled around her, engulfing her. Hawk reached out to grab her hand and the whiteness burned his palm. “God’s bones! This can no’ be. Ye’re a Drag…”

At exactly that moment, the two men from the bar skidded to a halt right outside the bedchamber door as soon as they saw Kate. Hawk’s eyes swirled and his claws were out as he stood in a protective stance in front of her. He growled low and deep, sending out a fierce warning.

The man with the cold blue stare reached out and touched the wall behind him and Hawk watched it turn to solid ice. The man continued, walking the perimeter of the room, never taking his hand off the wall. A layer of ice replaced the once mortar and stone, creating a prison of ice around them. What struck Hawk as odd was the evil way he looked at Kate.

“Who are ye?” Hawk asked.

“It does no’ matter who I am. Ye should be more worried aboot what I’m going to do to ye. Ye should have stayed dead,” the man hissed.

His companion laughed sinisterly as black smoke billowed around him.

Hawk looked from the ice man to the smoke man, sizing each one up. It was a standoff. Who was going to make the first move?

The white mist faded as Kate came to. Unexplainable power surged through her, swirling trails on her arms and chest. Something deep inside told her these men were here to hurt Hawk, but why, she did not know. She could feel the power intensifying in the room as the man in front of Hawk controlled a ring of black smoke in his hands, when from the corner of her eye she saw an ice sickle flying through the air, aimed right for Hawk.
